Flush It Friday: Eerie Insect Dreams
No peaceful night’s sleep is complete without a dream-time visit from a terrifying fictional species. In this nightmare, I don a flexible carbon-fiber glove to remove a red beetle from my pant leg; its mandibles clamp viciously on the protective garment. I move through the Cape Cod cottage that I spent many a childhood summer in and present the specimen to my family in the TV room. Holding the insect up, I notice that it has transformed into a hideous monstrosity of bulbous green flesh and bony plates several times larger than its larval form. Here’s my best attempt at illustrating it:
