This Toilet Tuesday (10/30/18)
It is Toilet Tuesday, my dudes. Let’s jam some dirty-ass metal in celebration. Arsis is pretty much the only thing that did anything for me this week, but Hans and Karhu have your back if you’re among those less inclined towards tech. If those don’t do anything for you, you can always join me in making fun of the rest of the bands in this dumb, awful release week.
Nocturn – Thrones of Deception (Independent) [Black Metal]

Didn’t turn out as interesting as I hoped it might upon hearing the very thrash intro part. Once the tremolo picking sets in, it quickly becomes fairly standard black metal for the middle part of the song before the outro throws in some slightly more interesting ideas again. I’m not quite sure what to make of it, but there’s enough good riffs and decent songwriting that I’d be willing to give the full thing a go. 11/2/18 (Hans)

Very straightforward, no-frills approach here, but thankfully not overdoing the “raw” thing. The blasting parts come sorta close to Legion-era Marduk or maybe something like Tsjuder or Urgehal, while the slower bits remind me of a less busy Absu. I highly doubt anything gets reinvented on this record, but there has to be a place for competent meat’n’potatoes black metal, as well. I actually find it oddly comforting, so let’s enjoy it in the brief period we have before we find out they’re a bunch of shitheads. 10/30/18 (Hans)

The masters of barbaric minimalism are back with their two-note, groovier than a man-with-chainsaw-hand, cum-drenched, bass-heavy blaspheming. Paul Ledney and co have never done but one thing, and Altar of The Virgin Whore changes nothing. But at no more than 20 minutes, it leaves the bands stripped-down approach more than potent. 11/2/18 (Karhu)
