O Cloggèd Can ov Chaos, O Pandemonious Potty, thy open maw doth beckon to our inner turmoil. This week, we’ve got oxymoron metal, zubztitute Zs, and hardly knew ’em!-core. The summer heat has left the waters low, but wade into the morass with me and you’re bound to find something to enjoy. Let us know what we missed in the comments!
Conglaciation – S/T (Liminal Dread Productions) [Disso Tech Death]
I was around two minutes into “Conglaciation” when my corpus callosum was cleft in two, fissures spreading out like cracks in a sheet of ice—such is the complexity of this dissonant death debut. The riffing in this moment split my attention with its use of dense counterpoint, at once maddening and intriguing, a sonic LeMarchand Configuration unfolding with each listen. Eerie clean breaks and a smattering of vocal styles, from gutturals to desiccated cords (think Chalky-era Psycroptic) provide much-needed signposts in the storm, keeping listeners engaged along the song’s chaotic path. The album’s bass-heavy (yet never muddy) production works as an anchor, keeping all these influences from congealing into a formless mass—that is the job of the audience.
