This Toilet Tuesday (9/11/18)
It is Toilet Tuesday, and I have returned to regurgitate a pile of half-digested new releases down your hungry throats. I have a question for you this time: how much new music do you generally scope out in a week? By “new” I mean bands you’re unfamiliar with, or maybe you only know by name. There’s a lot of stuff to sift through, and I’m curious how much of it actually gets listened to.
Xalpen – Wowk Otrr (Morbid Skull Records) [Black Metal]

Not as weird as it makes itself out to be, but far from as generic as it could be. Xalpen mostly keep things recognizable with second-wave riffing, but spruce it up enough to warrant some attention: d-beats are a nice surprise, and the insane, layered vocals are oddly entertaining. All in all, it seems like these guys are having – gasp – FUN, an impression supported by the maniacal laughter popping up here and there. 13/9/18 (Hans)

While I could see stoners having fun with the monotonous beat, there’s a distinct lack of fuzz, which prevents this from falling in the genre’s muddy trappings. A snarling guitar sound and the frequent aggression in the vocals push it more in the direction of sludge or post-hardcore. The overall atmosphere is certainly not a cozy one; you’re unlikely to fall asleep to this. Give it a go if you’re fresh out of weed and on edge. 14/9/18 (Hans)

This Toilet Tuesday is not, nor ever has been or ever will be, a competition, but if it was, I’d handily declare Black Viper the winner and be mailing them a gold-embossed toilet plaque to hang in their practice space. This is some prime speed metal; it’s fast as hell, full of shredding guitars and wailing vocals, and loaded with riffs that teem with energy. Trad metal enthusiasts should get on this right the fuck now, and, well, so should everyone else. 9/14/18 (Spear)
