This Toilet Tuesday (9/25/18)
It’s Toilet Tuesday, and holy shit that’s a lot of new music. Hans and I did our best to round it all up and parse through it for the good stuff, but we’re sure to have missed a few with all of this piling on. Take a look at that list and let us know what else is worthy of our time and attention.
Vreid – Lifehunger (Season of Mist) [Melodic Black Metal]

I’ll confess I’m not terribly familiar with Vreid despite loving their progenitor, but I quite like what I’ve heard of Lifehunger so far. This is some vicious black metal, but slow and methodical, a stark contrast to the blistering rage of Marduk and the like. There’s some interesting stuff going on in “Lifehunger” that you don’t hear in a whole lot of black metal, and the song structure is super weird, so this will definitely be one to watch. 9/28/18 (Spear)
Gevurah – Sulphur Soul (Profound Lore) [Black Metal]

On the other end of the black metal spectrum, we have Gevurah with a monster of a new track. It’s as caustic as Vreid is majestic, with big, hazy chords combining with a driving beat to form an intensely claustrophobic atmosphere. Hallelujah indeed. 9/28/18 (Spear)
Boar Worship – Balance of Terror (Independent) [Sludge/Doom]

Instead of going for the fat, warm sound common to the genre, this duo chooses a more minimal approach. With only drum and guitar – though I was almost sure it was a bass at first because of the odd sound – they craft brief, brisk compositions that don’t seem to give much of a hoot about most conventions. Distorted, acerbic vocals top off this wild ride. 9/23/18 (Hans)
