It’s the end of a nice relaxing day.  You’re tired but happy, going about your usual just-before-bed business when you’re suddenly stricken with an intense pain in the depths of your bowels.  You make a mad dash for the toilet, barely getting your pants down before you’re on your porcelain throne.  The cramps intensify as you sit, and you lean forward in a vain attempt to stifle the pain.  You push and strain, but to no avail; your bowels will simply not loosen.  You push for so long that you feel like giving up.  No, you tell yourself.  I can do this.  I’ve shit successfully hundreds of times.  Thousands, even!  But this shit proves to be a stronger foe than you could have imagined.  You are Beowulf, and this is your rectal Grendel.  But like Beowulf, you achieve your victory; after what seems like hours of anguish, you hear a satisfying “ker-plunk” and feel sweet relief as your intestines loosen.  You have earned your rest.  And so goes this week; there is an onslaught of new releases right at the start, almost too much to keep up with.  But if you push through it all, you will find many worthy releases.  Bask in your triumph. -Spear

*Sidenote: Primordium’s album “Aeonian Obsolescence,” originally due for release on 9/19, has been pushed back until further notice (and that sucks).  Rest assured that we’ll keep an eye on it.

dead mountain mouth

Dead Mountain Mouth – Viae (Independent) [Prog Metal]
Listen to “Lamb”

Dead Mountain Mouth are a black/doom/weirdo band from France that may or may not be named after the debut album by Genghis Tron. If that description turns you off, don’t let it. This is some solid and bizarre music that you should definitely give a try. The closest sonic touchstone I can find is Ephel Duath, so if you like your metal avant-garde, you owe it to yourself to check these chaps out. Plus, the Viae EP is available for any price, so you have nothing to lose. Man, there must be something in the water in France. (W.)

galg

Galg – Afzicht (Independent) [Black Metal/Noise]
Stream

Speaking of weird metal, Galg play noisy and uncomfortable black metal from the Netherlands. You can pick up the EP for any price on bandcamp, but this EP is a little more challenging than the aforementioned Viae. If you’re a fan of SPEKTR or Stagnant Waters, though, you should definitely give this a listen. It’s loud and abrasive, but it demands your attention throughout. Plus, the band’s self-description is great. “We are a group of happy individuals who are wholly content with modern life. Galg is the result of everything that depresses us.” That assessment fits. Check out Afzicht. (W.)

Emeth-Aethyr1

Emeth – Aethyr (Xtreem Music) [Brutal Death]
Listen to “Exterminate the Vacillating”

After six years of waiting Emeth has finally dropped a new album. I knew it would be good when I heard the first single Aethyr, but I didn’t realize just how good. This is potential album of the year material folks. Do yourself a favor and check it out. (Jack Bauer)

Reverorum Ib Malacht

Reverorum Ib Malacht – De Mysteriis Dom Christi (The Ajna Offensive) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Ps. 138, 1-18”

Now, I know many of you upon seeing the title of Reverorum Ib Malacht’s latest release will be shouting, “OH NO YOU DI’INT!” while sassily waving your fingers at your screens.  Indeed, it makes them sound like some Hot Topic poser white metal band trying to gain attention.  However, that is not the case.  “Ps. 138, 1-18” is some truly evil-sounding shit.  The lo-fi, minimalist black metal played over Gregorian chanting creates a feeling of being both in a wide space and claustrophobia, like being trapped in a haunted cathedral on your own.  Best listened to in the dark with good headphones. (Spear)
