This Toilet Tuewednesday (10/12/22)
Fear not, my precious shitterlings, for you have not been left behind by the new music list. Join me in some midweek jams; this is a pretty strong week for new tunes even with a general dearth of big names, and I’ve found a lot to like. Vorbid – A Swan by the Edge of Mandala (Indie Recordings) [Prog/Tech Thrash]
Having not been familiar with the band at all, Vorbid did a great job of catching my eye with that cover art and keeping my attention with some equally rad tunes. That genre descriptor might be a bit reductive or misleading; they’re one of those rare bands where “prog” is the only thing that’s actually accurate, as they hew to some tried and true prog metal writing tropes spiced up with a more aggressive approach. It’s a sort of pastiche of thrash and death metal swirled together in tricky rhythms and generally off-kilter riffs, but they don’t get too weird with it (at least not in any of the three songs currently up). They never get quite as noodly as Revocation, never as cheesy as Dream Theater, never as heavy as Alkaloid, instead occupying a comfortable middle ground that casts a wide net with who it should appeal to.
