Flush it Friday: Get Possessored by Possessor
I’ve fallen pretty far out of the horror movie scene since watching Hereditary and Midsommar—Ari Aster effectively spoiled me to the point where nothing else I was watching even came close. I honestly can’t remember how it happened, but I stumbled onto a best new horror of 2020 list and I’ve been on a binge ever since. Koko-di Koko-da was a big disappointment overall (although there were some eerie moments scattered through the drudgery), His House was well made and presented a unique angle of a refugee story through an (additional) layer of horror, but it was Brandon Cronenberg’s Possessor that made the deepest incision. The combination of hallucinogenic sequences, sci-fi concepts and (like father, like son) graphic violence was overwhelming—Possessor was quick to erode my comfort, and it didn’t return for days after watching. I’ve been the best kind of disturbed (the kind without Draiman) ever since.
