FLUSH IT FRIDAY: FOLK IT FRIDAY
Pleasant tidings, poop takers!
A lot of you might not know this about me, but I’m actually a huge fan of heavy music. Shocking, I know, given my calm, collected, mild-mannered demeanor. You wouldn’t think that I’m the kind of person who’s into all that noise and infernal screaming. I mean, come on, it all sounds the same! But I love a good down-tuned, stinky riff, I adore a fine set of blast beats, and I’m always down for a good BREEEEEEEEE!
And yet, sometimes I need a break. Sometimes heavy just isn’t what I’m hungry for. So what do I find myself turning to?
Folk music.
I’m not entirely sure what my introduction to the genre was. It certainly came later in my musical journey. The only folk music I grew up around was the bluegrass my dad would play, which never quite resonated with me. A lot of the bands and artists I first started with came courtesy of my lifelong best friend. If I were to make a guess as to who I started with, it would probably be Nick Drake. Drake’s story is a pretty sad one and he tragically passed away at the age of 26 with a discography that’ll only take you about an hour and 45 minutes to get through. My personal favorite of his three albums is Bryter Layter, but I think most people would recommend starting with Pink Moon.
Fleet Foxes is another group who got me into the genre. To this day, Helplessness Blues is not just my favorite of their albums, it is my favorite album. So many tracks on that record have touched me deeply and spiritually and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone with a pair of ears looking for something laid-back and comfortable.
Still in the mood for something on the heavier end? Listen to Emma Ruth Rundle. Her dark, almost gothic approach to the genre is one that’s as beautiful as it is somber. May Our Chambers Be Full, her 2020 collaboration LP with Thou, was probably my favorite album that I heard last year. Yet another record I cannot recommend enough.
But that’s more than enough blabbering from the guy named after the Magic card. Let’s hurry up and flush!
