Riff Of The Week: 3rd Album, 5th Song Edition
Riffs from Morbid Angel, Evoken, Death, Dysrhythmia, Intestine Baalism, Naglfar, Danzig, Disfiguring The Goddess, and QOTSA.
Last week was our Dirt Edition. For the 56th week this year Danzig was submitted. I’m awarding victory to Grave because hahahahah.
This week we asked for riffs from the 5th song on a band’s 3rd album.
Here’s what you sent in…
Weeaboo Jones
Intestine Baalism – ‘Wind of Death’ (Riff @ 1:44)
Rare instance of Intestine Baalism going doom and gloom on our sorry asses. Nihongo kawaii melodesu beats the ever living shit out of any other attempts at the genre, gomenasai. I just hope this riff makes your kokoro go ~kimochi ii~ as mine does and that hopefully you’ll realize Japanese products are superior to gaijin filth. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must clean my waifu Reimu and send hate comments to all the ungrateful women out there.
GoatForest
Naglfar “Devoured by Naglfar” (Riff @ 0:28)
Guard your fingernails, and ready yourselves for one Hel of a black metal groove.
tigeraid
Death – ‘Spiritual Healing’ (Riff @ 1:28)
Death is life.
Andrey Tkachenko
Evoken – ‘Pavor Nocturnus’ (Riff @ 0:41)
I am exactly the kind of fool who brings a funeral doom song to a riff contest.
Howard Deanzig
Queens of the Stone Age – “The Sky is Fallin'” (Riff @ 0:32)
So I fought off the urge to submit Danzig’s “Dirty Black Summer” for a back-to-back repeat win and went with my second pick. I’ve always dug this album mightily and this track is one of my favorites on it. The main riff here is equal parts heavy and whimsical and somehow succeeds in making me feel positive and warm despite the song’s bedlamic message.
Megachiles
Danzig- ‘Dirty Black Summer’ (Riff @0:45)
There were a lot of riffs I wanted to send (see: Carcass—Incarnated Solvent Abuse, Morbid Angel—The Lion’s Den, and Gojira—Where Dragons Dwell), but I knew it was my responsibility to submit this one… again. Let this serve as your weekly reminder that John Christ riffs and Glenn Danzig fucks (allegedly).
Clean Sanchez
Disfiguring The Goddess – ‘Industrial Quarter’ (Riff @ 0:04)
Let me start by saying this was a bit hard, not a lot of great track 5’s on album 3’s, a lot of interludes and mediocrity. Big Chocolate put two albums out for his third album under this band and boy is this a sweet riff off Deprive. Its slight variations on the same riff throughout, instrumental, but its a damn cool one. Once again my mom will be proud of my participation award.
DrummerNard
Morbid Angel – ‘Lion’s Den’ (Riff at 0:26)
Morbid Angel’s best album. Track 5. Done.
Lacertilian
Dysrhythmia – ‘Running Shoe Of Justice’ (Riff @ 2:20)
The Huff + Marston = Colinagelating brilliance.
Next week our theme is Alien
