Back online and brimming with riffs!

As you may have read last week, there seemed to be a malicious DDoS attack aimed directly at sabotaging our weekly riffing (*). After unravelling the Cyrillic encryption, preliminary investigations revealed the source of the spike to have originated from a military bunker in Severnaya, leaving us left to assume it was the work of one Boris Grishenko. I’m currently trying to convince Joe that we should hijack an EMP equipped 1996-model pirate stealth helicopter to return the favour, but he insists that’s a fucking stupid idea and that I’m a dickhead. Anyway, you can aide my rogue mission @ www.kickstarter.com/SměrťŠpionam. Before we get into today’s riffs, we’ve got the results from our Brutal Death Edition from a couple of weeks back, where Son ov Wolf scored a win with Cryptopsy. An honorary howl and growl are in order. Wait, is that an obscure sex manoeuvre? It probably is. Check on urban dictionary, and then perform it on an inanimate object of your choice.

As we discussed on last week’s Sunday Sesh and on the TovH FB group, this week is a free-for-all with no theme and we got a nice variety of riffs to battle it out for your approval. Here be they…

Shakes999

Wayfarer – “Old Souls’ New Dawn”

Since it’s free-for-all week here’s my pick of Wayfarer – “Old Souls, New Dawn” at 00:25. In a 10 minute track with great riffs, this is the one that sets the tone for the entire track and despite being used sparingly, is the one that sticks with you long after the songs over.

Esusmoose

Deadly Nights – “From Hell”

With the theme change you might have expected someone to post slayer. Well I hope not, that would be terrible. Sweet chorus riff off of Deadly Nights’ 2016 album Descend into Madness, fairly no frill old school riffage, 1:03 be the first hit, but @ 4:13 after the solo is probably the better and more energetic. And just think you could have listened to some 000 000 0000 000 riff.

Richter

Furia – “Tam jest tu”

Furia does not get enough coverage. Probably because all their titles and lyrics are in Polish while Mgla’s are not. Listen to the multi-layered riff @ 19:37 and WITNESS THEM.

Howard Dean

Katharsis – “Eden Belovv”

In the world of earth-shaking, life-altering, soul-searing black metal riffs, Katharsis stands as one of The Masters of the Universe. Their best riffs have an otherworldly air. When they drop on you mid-track it’s as though the fibers of reality are tearing apart. and you can do nothing but sit slack-jawed and empty, drooling and shitting in your pants like an infantile sack of meat. As they create, so they destroy. Start at 3:50. This sequence is one of the most hair-raising bits in all of black metal. The break, the tremolo, the shrieks. This carries an HD “Shit Your Pants” guarantee. Prepare a change of undies and press play.

Ted Nü-Djent

Vader – “Parabellum”

I had the new Vader in my wishlist forever until a certain Kvlt individual was kind enough to buy me a copy the other week when Bandcamp was being all charitable to the YMCA or something. Anyway, I’m glad he did because the album rips tissues. The riff that I have selected this week is a short and sweet one, it appears only twice at the 0.06 mark and at 1.41 and each time it only goes for 14-15 seconds each time so you have no excuse to not listen to it. Anyway, I like it as it’s one of those riffs that really sets up the song. I hope you do too. Cheers.

Lacertilian

Wiegedood – “Ontzieling”

While I still haven’t decided if I prefer the Belgian band’s album from a few weeks back more than their excellent debut, one thing I do know is that the riff @ 2:44 forced my hand into pre-ordering the album immediately. Even if you only got this riff for the album price, it would still be worth it. Maybe that’s why I can’t decide on which album I prefer, because all I end up doing is listening to this on repeat.

Next week we’re going to be accepting riffs from 6th songs only, i.e. the riff must come from the sixth song of an album. That should give you plenty of choices. Send your entries to toiletovhellriff@gmail.com along with a YouTube link to the song, a time-stamp of the riff, your screen-name, and a short description. Anyone can enter so don’t be shy.

*- Total bullshit. I was just getting some 404 error that prevented me from logging on to write the post…I still blame Boris though.
