This Toilet Tuesday (12/18/18)

It’s Toilet Tuesday once again, and as list season draws to a close (for us, anyway), it seems the tide of new music has receded somewhat. Not to say that there’s nothing good this week; the new Sulphur Aeon comes out this Friday (it’s very good- stream down below), and Hans and I were able to find a couple other albums that tickled our fancy. Get on those for some sweet jams, then hit that list for more.

Cntmpt – Towards Neglect (Into Endless Chaos) [Black Metal]

It’s not often that instrumental music does something for me, but somehow, CNTMPT’s 2014 album works; harsh, cold black metal interspersed with bits of noise and a few quiet passages. This new one sees the band becoming more melodic and slightly more creative with the songwriting. Also not strictly instrumental anymore, though I can’t tell if the wails, screams, and chants are actually lyrics. Not yet sure I like it as much as the first one, but both albums are definitely worth checking out. 12/17/18 (Hans)

Witching Hour – …and Silent Grief Shadows the Passing Moon (Hells Headbangers) [Black Thrash/Speed Metal]

Bands founded on the conceit of an old school sound are a dime a dozen, but ones that can actually put a few good riffs together into a compelling song are a rarity. Witching Hour is just such a band, taking that classic Venom sound and doing it… well, much better than their progenitors could muster, to be honest. No special flash or flair here; just really good metal. 12/21/18 (Spear)
