Profane Elegy – When All Is Nothing (Independent) [Blackened Death]
Blackened death is a genre with a major issue—namely 7+ minute songs with almost no variance in tempo, or sense of dynamics whatsoever. I love my blastbeats, but without a variety of tempos and riffing styles, it’s nigh impossible to stand out in this oversaturated style. Profane Elegy excises this monotony, replacing repetition with surprising twists like the Nechochwen-esque cleans and acoustic guitar layering in “Architects” and the groovy, beatdown death that introduces the title track. When All Is Nothing is a concise, stankface-inducing display that respects its audience—but certainly not their necks. -Roldy
