8 riffs AH AH AH AH AH AH AH AH

Last week we hailed the overlords of death with our The Chasm Edition, filled with riffs exclusively from the Mexican maestro’s back catalogue. As I mentioned before the contest, everyone wins this week. 100% correct answers, possibly a first for Riff Of The Week.

This week we asked for Numerical riffs. No, not mathcore, nor riffs played on guitars that require a semester of complex algebra in order to tune, just riffs from bands/albums/songs with a numerical reference in their title. We got a fairly broad range of stuff sent in, including a few classics and some lesser-known numbers. Dammit, I just inadvertently dropped a lame number pun. Count on me to do something stupid like that. Fuck. I’m out.

GoatForest

1349 – “Singer of Strange Songs” (Riff @ 0:00)

This riff is notable for two reasons. First, it is a black metal song that emphasizes bass to create a menacing atmosphere. Second, the build up of sonic layers is simply fantastic. I humbly request that Frost and Co.’s fine riff be seriously considered for the Academy’s Riffy Award.

Taz

Leviathan – “VI-XI-VI” (Riff @ 0:00)

RIFF START FROM 00.00 AND GO FOR MUCH OF SONG. MONOTONOUS AND HYPNOTIC IT ALL GO QUIET FROM 03.45 WHERE IT GO ‘WOOOO’ AND ‘WEEEEEE’ AND MAKE TAZ SLEEPY BUT THEN RIFF COME BACK AT 05.22 WITH “RRRAAAARRGGGHHH” AND FRIGHTEN TAZ AND MAKE BREAKFAST COME OUT OF BOTTOM. TAZ LIKE.

xtuffxghostx

Radiation 4 – “John vs. the Elephant” (Riff @ 3:05)

So Radiation 4 were kind of a Myspace band, but they had some really interesting riffs. The closing riff of this song (starts at 3:05) is one of the best uses of bass ever, and is also 10/4 time [numerical] which you don’t get everyday.

DeathToFalseMetal

Carcass – “1985” (Riff @ 0:00)

Ah, 1985. When Leather and Lace were in full swing. But through all that Hair Spray and Lipstick, there’s this shimmering beauty of an instrumental which starts out Carcass’ Legendary Album Surgical Steel. This riff starts at 0:00 and might make you want to look up a few OSHA laws in the process.

The_Dude

Bolt Thrower – “The IVth Crusade” (Riff @ 0:00)

The riff starts at the beginning and continues here and there throughout the song. But you already knew that, because who doesn’t love this masterpiece.

Jacob Lewis

Phobia – “New 4th Reich” (Riff @ 1:08)

The riff at 1:08 makes me wanna punch that Nazi Trump in the face.

GRUMP DUMPUS

Absu – “Four Crossed Wands (Spell 181)” (Riff @ 0:00)

HERE IS MY NUMEROLOGICAL RIFF SUBMISSION WHICH BEGINS PROMPTLY AT 0:00 BECAUSE PROSCRIPTOR’S PREFACE IS AN ESSENTIAL ALCHEMICAL INGREDIENT IN THE RIFF SORCERY AND THE POTATO AUDIO QUALITY IS IRRELEVANT BECAUSE YOU ALREADY MEMORIZED ALL THE RIFFS ON TARA BACK IN 2001 BY LISTENING TO IT ON REPEAT NON-STOP WHILE READING DR. DOOM COMIC BOOKS

Lacertilian

Seventh Xul – “Serpent’s Divinity” (Riff @ 9:47)

Above me are Carcass, Leviathan, Absu, and bloody Bolt Thrower. Listen to the riff at 9:47 and then go vote for one of them I guess.
