It’s Toilet Tuesday, and I’m already itching for Flush It Friday. Work has put me through the ringer, and I’m ready to chill. Grab your beverage of choice and join me in some morning drinking while we jam some sweet new tunes. As always, be sure to check out the list and let us know what else we need to hear.

Shepherd/Death By Fungi – Shep // DBF (split- Independent) [Sludge/Hardcore]
Stream

Two pretty different bands that both know how to surprise you. After Death By Fungi’s “Edgelord Beatdown”, I thought I was in for fairly straightforward hardcore, but the other two songs pulled the rug from under my feet with dissonant guitars and even a smooth jazzy passage. Shepherd get a little jazzy too, but they don’t even have the courtesy of giving you a false sense of security; after the stupidly long intro sample, all bets are off. Throwing curve balls aplenty, they remind me of Mutoid Man in terms of no-holds-barred weirdness and disregard for genres. Slightly sludgy, a little stoner, perhaps a bit hardcore, but the sum is a lot more than its parts. Songs sometimes seem in danger of coming apart at the seams (the nicely rickety sound probably helps that impression), but they reel it all in again before it gets too crazy. 8/15/17 (Hans)

Khazaddum – Plagues upon Arda (Independent) [Brutal Death Metal]
Listen to “The Deathless Crown,” “Masters of the Plains”

If you’ve ever thought that bands that sing about Middle Earth are a bit too flowery or that Hour of Penance could stand to sing about dwarves every now and then, you might want to take a listen to Khazaddum. They explore the more savage side of Tolkien’s mythology, and the music reflects that. The two songs revealed so cut from the same cloth as the aforementioned band, but if their previous EP is anything to go by, we’ll get some solid slam riffs alongside the uncompromising blast-and-tremolo flurry. 8/19/17 (Spear)

Sons of Crom – The Black Tower (Nordvis) [CROM]
Listen to “Black Wings Up High”

With a name like Sons of Crom, you pretty much know exactly what you’re getting out of this band before you even listen. Indeed, they do not disappoint; “Black Wings Up High” features soaring tenor vocals atop marching doom riffs of fire and steel, culminating in a gloriously shreddy solo. It promises adventure, and if the rest of the album is this strong, it will certainly deliver. 8/18/17 (Spear)
